Aside from seeing the finished product, one of our favourite parts of the bespoke process is when the design for a truly unique and personal engagement ring is decided upon. Here, our client asked us to create a vintage inspired engagement ring. Of course this had to involve sapphires and diamonds…
We designed around three different shapes of sapphire centre stones: princess cut, oval and round.

Once the client had decided upon the oval central sapphire we started to create the ring. This was done in a very piecemeal way to achieve precision and the perfect polish on each and every part. The ring was initially cast in four parts. After cleaning, three of the parts were soldered together ready for the first stones to be set. Stone setting was done in sections to ensure the princess cut sapphires were nice and square. This would be impossible to do if all the sections were in place.
The images below show the gradual creation of such an intricate ring. Care is taken at each stage.
All the milgrain (the bobbly detail on the edges of the ring) was applied by hand. This ensures a perfect polish and definition of every little bead. Many high street jewellers tend to cast this in place as it’s very time consuming but at Veale Fine Jewellery we take great pride in using the best of traditional craft alongside understanding when the latest technology is appropriate.
Below is the finished ring. We’re pleased to say it got a YES!
