Graduated Diamond Rings: Exploring Our Signature Style

The Design Behind The Cambridge Ring

James designed the ring to deliver maximum impact while remaining comfortable and practical to wear every day. The graduated layout allows the most prominent stones to sit where they will be seen — on top — while the smaller ones wrap underneath, keeping the ring beautifully balanced on the hand.

This design makes sense both visually and practically. The bold focal point offers brilliance and elegance without the bulk of a full band of large stones. It also means you’re not investing in diamonds that remain hidden beneath the hand. The ring features a shared claw setting where four fine claws delicately hold each diamond. A subtle gap beneath the stones allows light to pass all the way around them for maximum sparkle. James also added a soft pink diamond, held in 18-carat rose gold, to symbolise the birth of a girl. Pink diamonds are rare and valuable stones, making the ring even more meaningful and precious.

This ring marked the beginning of our family and is a piece of Veale heritage. Although our second daughter, Darcy, is still waiting for hers!

Graduated Diamond Rings: Changing the Setting Style

Alongside The Cambridge Ring which features a shared-claw setting, we have created variations of the graduated eternity ring using different setting styles.

The Bond Street Ring: A Scalloped-Set Eternity Ring

In The Bond Street Ring the diamonds sit within a scalloped setting where a line of metal contours each stone without enclosing it. The result is a flowing line of diamonds with light moving beautifully from one stone to the next. The ring takes its name from New Bond Street, where James spends much of his time working with the setters there who bring our rings to life.

The Royal Crescent Ring: A Pavé-Set Eternity Ring

In The Royal Crescent Ring the graduated diamonds are set within a straight channel of metal, with small platinum beads between the stones. This setting holds the diamonds neatly within the band, creating a clean, structured look. The design works particularly well as a half or three-quarter eternity ring for those who want a graduated diamond band without diamonds all the way around. Not having a full eternity ring also allows for easier resizing in the future. The ring takes its name from The Royal Crescent in Bath, Somerset — a renowned Grade I listed terrace celebrated for its sweeping, curved architecture.

All three designs share the same graduated arrangement of diamonds, yet each creates a distinct aesthetic. The Cambridge Ring feels traditional, delicate and timeless; The New Bond Street Ring is more modern, slightly bolder and reminiscent of a bubble ring; while The Royal Crescent Ring has a sharper, more structured look that pairs beautifully with other pavé-set rings.

Graduated Diamond Rings: Changing the Diamond Shape

James later created another variation of a scalloped-set eternity ring – The New Bond Street Ring – which uses oval-shaped diamonds that graduate in size. The result is a show-stopping piece.

As the ring is designed to be worn alongside other jewellery, James combined both white and yellow metals. In the version photographed here, a scalloped 18-carat yellow gold setting holds the oval diamonds, while a platinum inlay is subtly visible on closer inspection.

In the workshop we are developing another variation of the graduated design using emerald-cut diamonds for a step-cut interpretation. We look forward to sharing the finished ring soon.
