Designing an Engagement Ring in Hertfordshire

Designing a bespoke engagement ring brings anticipation, secrecy and – a huge amount of – pressure. At our Hertfordshire studio we bring clarity from the first conversation.

Finding an engagement ring style that suits her

You don’t need prior knowledge or a fully formed idea before meeting James. If you have a few thoughts or remember a hint she’s mentioned, that’s more than enough. By understanding her personal style, daily life and some personal details, James can shape possible directions. You’ll explore different settings, proportions and diamond shapes, gradually building a picture of what feels right.

Viewing engagement rings in person at our studio also helps bring ideas into focus. You can respond instinctively to what resonates when you see scale, sparkle and craftsmanship up close. You may find inspiration in our guide: How To Create A Truly Personal Engagement Ring.

Balancing design and budget for your bespoke engagement ring

Engagement ring prices vary significantly. One advantage of choosing a bespoke ring is that every element, from diamond size to setting style, can be shaped around the budget you feel comfortable with.

“Every element of a bespoke ring can be shaped around a budget you feel comfortable with”

For some, that means investing in the carat weight of the centre stone. For others, it means allocating more budget towards intricate details and additional stones. James will guide you through the options and explain where your budget will have the greatest visual impact and how small refinements can influence overall cost.

Choosing the right diamond for your bespoke engagement ring

The centre diamond largely determines both the character and cost of your ring. We take time to ensure you understand exactly what you’re selecting.

James will guide you through how diamonds differ in appearance and value, and help you understand the nuances of the 4Cs. Rather than relying on specifications alone, you’ll learn what genuinely makes a stone exceptional and what influences beauty and overall value.

Once you’ve narrowed down your diamond options, we can arrange for you to view these in person at our Hertfordshire studio. Seeing the stones side by side allows you to appreciate how they reflect light, their proportions and their presence. You’ll gain clarity to make informed decisions with confidence.

Planning your bespoke engagement ring around the proposal

Whenever possible, it’s always better to allow more time rather than rush. From your first conversation to the finished piece, the full process typically takes around 8–10 weeks. Once the design is approved, creation usually takes approximately six weeks. If you’re working towards a specific date, we’ll always do everything we can to accommodate your plans.

And when the moment arrives, you won’t just be presenting a ring — you’ll know exactly why it’s the right one.

Creating A Bespoke Engagement Ring in Hertfordshire

Every engagement ring we create carries a personal story. Here are a few examples of how clients have approached the design process.

Josh’s Mountain Proposal

Josh came to us after seeing a platinum engagement ring on our website that he loved, but he couldn’t shake the worry that she might want something different. After viewing the ring in person he knew it was the one – but he wanted her opinion too.

So we created a plan. We prepared a beautiful design document showing the ring and diamond Josh had chosen. Josh proposed with our sample ring (which was slightly too big and had a smaller diamond in place) explaining her final ring would be made just for her.

They later visited the studio together and explored a few possible adjustments. In the end, Coral happened to choose exactly what Josh had originally planned.

Cost of a Bespoke Engagement Ring in Hertfordshire

The cost of a bespoke engagement ring is primarily influenced by the centre diamond, followed by the complexity of the design and the type and weight of precious metal.

Bespoke engagement rings typically begin from around £3,000. Delicate, refined designs often fall between £3,000–£8,000. Larger diamonds and more statement rings generally start from £8,000+.

James will always source a selection of diamonds and can present different design variations to you, clearly outlining how each option influences price. We’ll guide you through the choices so you can move forward with complete confidence.

Bespoke Engagement Ring FAQs

This is a common worry which is why we guide you carefully through the design process to help you choose a ring that is right for her.

If your partner would like to adjust something afterwards we can often refine the ring together after she has seen it. As each engagement ring is made to order full refunds aren’t possible but we always aim to find a constructive solution if adjustments are needed.

Start with her personal style. Does she wear delicate or more distinctive jewellery? Does she wear yellow gold, platinum or mixed metals?

When designing a bespoke engagement ring in Hertfordshire James will guide you through different styles, diamond shapes and settings to help you choose something that reflects her style.

Not knowing your partner’s ring size is very common. We can create the engagement ring to an estimated size and resize it afterwards if needed. Most bespoke engagement rings can be adjusted (with no visible signs) and resizing is included as part of the process.

Discretion is built into every stage. Appointments are private, communication is considered and collection or secure delivery can be arranged around your proposal plans. We regularly help clients keep their bespoke engagement ring a complete surprise.

Rosie will arrange either a short introductory call or your first appointment at our Hertfordshire studio or in London.

James will then guide you through styles, diamonds and budget considerations before preparing design ideas and stone options for you to review.

You can propose with a sample ring or selected diamond and refine the final design with your partner afterwards. Or you can design it jointly first and arrange a surprise proposal later. We’ll guide you through whichever approach feels right for you.

Not necessarily. Because every element is chosen intentionally a bespoke engagement ring is often shaped around your budget.

Working directly with an independent designer also means you’re paying for exactly what you want, rather than choosing a pre-set design from a collection.

We don’t as standard practice but we can do. James will explain the differences between natural and lab-grown diamonds to you, including long-term considerations, so you can choose what’s right for you.

We only work with carbon-neutral or carbon-negative laboratory grown diamonds. See our lab-grown diamond guide for more information.

Yes, diamonds above 0.5 carats are sourced with GIA certification.

Smaller accent stones are carefully matched in quality to your centre diamond.

No. While many clients visit our Hertfordshire studio we design bespoke engagement rings for clients across the UK and internationally. Meetings are also available in London or we can design your ring remotely (which works perfectly well).
